Knowledge Has Power to Heal
by Linda Potter

Vivian’s back had become a problem for her during the past couple of years. As the days wore on, the pain seemed to increase forcing her to seek medical help. She had wonderful doctors that ran all tests related to finding the source of her back pain. But, even with the best of their expertise, they found no specific physical reason for Vivian to be in such pain. She could not remember injuring herself in any way. She only knew that her back began to severely ache at the same time she was given an overload of paperwork at the office.

There seemed to be no end to the amount of administrative work Vivian’s supervisor would put upon her. She said it seemed as if her supervisor took pleasure in the hardship she was causing Vivian. Everyone in the office knew that it was Vivian’s nature to work over and above the average person. She was self motivated and always gave 110%, often putting her job before her own wellbeing. The others observed how the supervisor was taking advantage of Vivian’s exceptional work ethic and good nature. Over the past two years, Vivian came to resent the unreasonable requests of her supervisor. But, for some reason, she couldn’t seem to stand up for herself. Vivian’s back was the worst it had been with still no answers as to why. The medication she had been prescribed was barely taking the edge off the pain. Life was miserable.

Vivian still remembers that it was a Friday when a friend of hers invited her to attend a workshop. It was our workshop and the subject matter to be discussed was how past lives often affect our current lives, both physically and emotionally. There was also going to be a facilitated group meditation and Vivian’s friend, Leah thought it might be good for Vivian. Leah figured that at the least Vivian would be able to relax for a few minutes during the meditation, something Vivian rarely did.

The workshop seemed to captivate both Leah and Vivian. They found the premise of connecting their past lives with their current life issues a fascinating one. It was a perspective they hadn’t given much consideration to before now.

It was during a point in the meditation where everyone in the group was told they could ask of themselves a question regarding any area of their lives. They were to remain in a relaxed state and the information would present itself. Such was the case for Vivian when she asked where her back pain originated. It was then that her past life began to unfold in incredible detail.

She saw herself in the 1800’s. It was America, in the Deep South and she was a male slave. Vivian entered into this life as a young man in his early 20’s, but felt as if he was much older. He had been a slave ever since he could remember and the physical labor he had been shackled with was beyond current day comprehension. His “boss” would force him to carry an unreasonable amount of weight on his back as he worked the fields each and every day. He could carry more than most slaves, but this boss seemed to enjoy the physical pain he inflicted upon this young slave to an appalling degree.

The young black man suffered incredible back pain as this slave due to the unreasonable physical labor he endured that entire life. There was never any respite from the amount of work he was given. He died of a broken back before he reached the age of 32. His last thoughts were of the great injustice he had suffered at the hands of another.

At this point of the information gathering, the group was now told to look at the people in the past life they were visiting. They were to see if any of the people from the past life resembled anyone in their current life. To Vivian’s surprise, the boss in her past life as a slave was the same soul as her current day supervisor! The connecting lines were being drawn.

It was the meditation that brought the long elusive answer to Vivian’s back problem. She did not expect in her wildest imagination before coming to the workshop that she would leave that night with an understanding of the origin of her back pain.

Toward the end of the meditation, the participants were told it was the time to release whatever negative issue they had been dealing with. Vivian took a deep breath and gladly released her back pain back where it came from, the slave life in the American south in the 1800’s.

After the meditation, Leah and Vivian spent time together discussing their individual personal discoveries of the past life they each had visited. It was quite a revelation for them both and gave them much to think about.

Vivian’s back showed remarkable improvement in the weeks following the group meditation. She still had some difficulty now and again with back pain, but the improvement was enough to greatly improve her quality of life.

In my last conversation with Vivian, she commented on how the lesson of standing up for herself seemed to be a theme in both her past life and her current one. She was beginning to understand that she didn’t have to put up with the unreasonable demands of her supervisor anymore. Vivian figured that with a concentrated effort to do so, she will become more comfortable with standing up for herself. She then astutely observed that once she accomplishes this, and the lesson is fully learned, her back pain may also heal just as completely.
